First video game ever was Pokemon Gold. I was maybe 6. I remember not being able to leave the house you start the game in. I had to have my dad figure out that you just walk into the little rectangle to leave. From there I picked cyndaquil and I was off to the races. Don't remember much else, I thought the animation for Fire Spin was epic, and always got mad when it missed. I also think I killed ho-oh because I didn't really understand that "legendary" meant "you only get one shot at catching this thing and never again."
