The first gen was ambitious as fuck for what hardware it ran on, to the point that a few corners had to be cut in order to code everything they wanted to on the game. They spent years working on the games, and everything afterwards only further polished what was effectively a perfect system as it was; some of you spend too much time thinking of the few things that changed over the years, rather than the myriad of mechanics that didn't.
