Ruka is such a cool chick. She's always actin' so silly. She's also never shy with the hugs which is a major plus. And girl can dance. Every so often she'll teach me some new moves. Absolute icon.

I wouldn't say I love her or anything. We're more like...partners. My goal is to get stronger and she needs strong pokemon. So I help her out with my strength and she gets me to fight stronger and stronger opponents. A simple transaction? What? You didn't say anything about love? Well I-uh...no comment!

Ruka is an absolute party animal. With her the part don't ever stop. You never know what that crazy girl is gonna cook up next! I'm only sticking around cuz she's super fun. If she ever tries to get serious with me , I'm bouncing.

A big part of why I wanted Clefairy on her team is because I have this running gag in my head that Ruka will never catch a pikachu. And to that end I like the idea of her catching pokemon's other potential mascot, Clefairy. Plus as a kid I love how whenever Clefairy appeared in the anime it would always immediately use metronome and make some random bad thing happen and I wanted that energy on Ruka's team. Ruka is very loose and wild so having a "fuck it we ball" pokemon on her team felt perfect. She's the " Party Gyaru"

I'll be perfectly honest. He was added for balance reasons. I feel like having a fire/water/grass triangle is pretty solid. But the more I think about him the more I love it. The tiger stripes are so gyaru aesthetic. And Ruka is absolutely a dog person. I imagine Arcanine doesn't evolve until late into her journey. Definitely the "Gyaru with a big fluffy dog" trope.

Another casualty of my favoritism. Slowpoke is mostly included cuz I like it. Though to be fair it's big saucer eyes and dopey look does for ruka's aforementioned questionable taste. I guess I'll give him the "unmotivated/lazy gyaru" archetype

Before I decided to give her growlithe I wanted her to have one of those little purse dogs. Its mostly just for eye candy and doesn't battle. i just thought it would be funny if she had one of those bratty dogs.

Despite breaking my kanto/Johto only rule I feel like I have to include it. It's got such a gaudy loom to it between its color scheme and exaggerated eyelashes. Of all Ruka's pokemon I wanted it to be the most vapid and vain gyaru. But with a bit of a romantic side.
Most of the rest are moreso filler than thematic for any reason which is why I tend to not talk about them.
Now I'll pose the question. What reason, thematic or otherwise, does your OC have the pokemon they have?

Alright I'm gonna cheat just a little bit.

Always wears a bikini top regardless of the weather. Has her hair tied in a ponytail with blue highlights at the tips. Her tan is even deeper due to spending so much time in the sun.
>Water Ruka team
Staryu, Slowpoke, shellder (sometimes attached to slowpoke) Azumarill with her ace...Jynx. Jynx runs a dry skin set setting up rain for passive healing and using it to power up its water pulse. Then once the opponent is drenched it freezes then solid with ice beam.
>Fairy Ruka
Constantly wearing flashy and gaudy looking fashion. She wears her long hair down with curls at the ends and the tips are dyed a vibrant pink.
>Fairy Ruka team
Clefairy, Aromatisse, Azumarill (again) and....tera Fairy Jynx. She Tera types her Jynx fairy to remove several of its weaknesses while also being able to outspeed and threaten the poison types that counter it with its speed psychic attacks. Stays healthy with its draining kiss and obliterated dragons with Blizzard. I could also be talked into putting bellossom on this team, a pokemon I am shocked didn't have the fairy type added. (Not that I mind. A 4x weakness to poison would be devastating.) But it does learn a lotta moves like moonblast that fit the fairy aesthetic.
I guess the real question is if type specialist means "only can use that type of pokemon" or simply "their team revolves around a type/strategy. Like how there's gym leaders/elite 4 who use pokemon technically outside their type but fit their overall theme. (Such as lance using gyarados)

Hyper Offense: Ruka's Jynx is pretty frail but thrives on its speed and high special attack stats. She uses her speed to quickly close distance with a flurry of ice punches to wear down the opponents defences. From a distance she can keep the opponent at bay with her powerful psychic or blizzard. Defensively she can use psychic to divert the path of special attacks to minimize damage. In close combat Jynx will often attempt to lovely kiss the opponent, which upon landing sets them up for a devastating followup attack. Making engaging her also a huge risk. High risk high reward strategy.
>Bellossom
Setup sweeper: Despite its low speed Ruka'a bellossom is very evasive, constantly dancing the entire time its in battle. It often begins with a teeter dance to confuse the opponent. Then she can transition into swords dance or petal dance. From there she transitions between the 3 dances and sweet scent to further disorient the opponent. This strategy can quickly snowball out of control if not stopped early on.
>Azumarill
Hyper offense: Azumarril takes advantage of his huge power by usually sticking to a handful of high damage physical moves. Usually moves like aqua tail or waterfall for water STAB, play rough and Superpower for coverage. I don't know if I'll give him belly drum or not.
>Clefairy
Disruption: Metronome metronome metronome. Spin the roulette wheel cuz not even Clefairy knows what move it'll do next. For more consistent options it has swift and dazzling gleam to fall back on. And wish to keep it and its partners healthy. So it can keep using metronome, Baby!

Ruka's got quite a lot of pokemon she swaps between freely. She definitely has her "hard hitters" but she often also uses her pokemon for travel or adventuring reasons.

Ruka's team is made out of miscellaneous bullshit so probably pretty bad. Ruka's ACE is her Jynx which itself is a frail ice/Psychic type with decent special attack and speed and mediocre everything else. Her most competitively viable pokemon would be azumarril, and even then not for the moveset she gave it. I guess also slowbro but she doesn't let it stay evolved for long. As for her strategies, she just goes with whatever moved her pokemon want to learn. She'd be the enigma of the site. On paper she's a dogshit trainer but her win/loss ratio is weirdly skewed to her being a strong trainer.

Ruka was trying to pick plants to make into a stew. She plucked an Oddish and it began to shriek loudly. Ruka threw a pokeball at it just to make it stop. Soon after it evolved into a gloom.

There was a marill in the woods basically fighting any trainer that passed. Ruka ended up beating it with gloom, frustrating him by dodging out of his range and using ststus moves like leech seed and sleep powder. He and Ruka don't get along at first since he's very aggressive and brawly and doesn't enjoy ruka's cutesy gyaru tastes so Ruka has to learn to understand her pokemon and what they want more than what she wants.

Ruka literally just sees him sleeping on a rock and likes his vibe so she catches him with a pokeball. Because he was asleep she didn't realize he was essentially an ALPHA pokemon. He's super lax though and rarely battles so it takes ruka a while to notice

Ruka had to go through Mt. Moon on a full moon. She happened upon a huge gathering of clefairy, Cleffa and Clefable. What happened next is a blur but Ruka and her pokemon spent the whole night having a wild full moon party with the Clefairy. She wandered out of the cave the next day in a haze. She was followed by a Clefairy. The Clefairy thinks Ruka is the most fun person it ever met and apparently ruka and it bonded a bunch over that night and now it wants to come on her journey.

Ruka received an egg from a daycare couple and it eventually hatched into her snubull. Ruka basically coddles it like a baby or one of those purse dogs.

With Ruka I try to have a healthy mix of fully, partially and unevolved pokemon, mostly because I've always liked the eclectic nature of Ash's team. Since it's just a story I can more or less say "this unevolved pokemon is stills trong enough to compete with more evolved forms and the like.
