The idea is that, like Psyduck, newer gens use deeper colors -- and much therefore, much more contrast. Hence, why the toxic symbol is red. Red, inset eyes (with bags) due to gases (plus matching with the symbol).
Since there's a lifeform budding off of the original head, I decided removing the pupils would add a certain creep factor (blah, blah, blah pollution is bad).
After doing so many of these, I definitely think the key is to change as little as possible.
