Reminder that Bulbasaur was very popular in Japan back in the day which let Ash's Bulbasaur to stay the longest than any of Ash's Pokemon after Pikachu and the fact that they made several mangas starring Red with Venusaur over Charizard and Blastoise.

Venusaur line are popular but their fanbase are whiny like charizard fans demanding TPC all the time for special attention like crying for dragon type for 15 years

and there's a manga based on the TCG where the main protagonist has a Mega Venusaur.

None of these matter because the mangas aren't part of the games canon, but TPC has established Bulbasaur as the main character's pokemon several times even in merchs.

even the TCG artbook cover shows Venusaur fighting Charizard, which only happens if Red picked Bulbasaur and Blue picked Charmander.
