>>53625611In a vacuum I'd be fine with it, since I believe pokemon peaked conceptually with Megas, the idea of bringing out the ultimate power of one's pokemon specifically through your bond with said pokemon
In a story focusing on humans and pokemon working together, perhaps when that isn't so commonplace like PLA, I can easily see a surprise mega evolution working as a climax/part of the climax
That said it would only work if the even is given the proper weight, just saying "lmao mega zoroark isn't it so COOL!?!" obviously isn't gonna work anywhere near as well
Perhaps in such a story mega evolution could work more like an individual transformation, rather than a species-wide one. In such a case say, two mega lucario might have the same broad strokes, but their transformations would differ in detail and thus so would their abilities
Thus the gameplay issue of only a few pokemon being able to mega-evolve would be averted, and it would work better so not every incredible close bond between two individuals wouldn't unlock the same exact power boost
I don't think I've actually READ a story with fanmade megas though, so this might all absolutely fall through in practice
