Normally, a Fairy Wind from a Mawile would do bugger all, but with the Fake Tears effect and Sandshrew's already abysmal Sp. Def makes it do a chunk of damage.
Sandshrew gets thrown back by the wind, rolling on the sand, in agony. Good thing the battle is, well, on sand, so Sandshrew feels right at home.
"Sandshrew, Mud Slap!"
Sandshrew curls up into a ball again, this time slamming himself into the ground, magically turning the sand into mud. Mawile gets hit by the mud and reels back. It's super effective, but Sandshrew's terrible Sp. Atk means it isn't that strong. Fortunately, Mawile won't be hitting as much attacks now.

Mawile leaps forward and nearly swallows Sandshrew with it's... What is that thing anyway? Point is, Sandshrew is stuck, and is squirming in pain.
"Shrew... Sandshrew... Sandshrew!"
