What do you make of the theory that ghost type specialists need to have a strong spirit to survive training their pokemon.
A common theme with ghost pokemon is that they feed off human emotion, with a focus on the negative ones. This would mean that Kanto's Mediums and most Hex Maniacs have been mentally warped by the impacts of being exposed to an excess of ghost pokemon. The gym leaders and elite four on the other hand are all displayed as being more collected in on way or another, representing their ability to overcome the drain that all their ghost pokemon would have on them.
This is why ghost type trainers tend to run the gambit on personality. The only thing they really need to excel with the type is a strength of will to stand strong against their feeding, and a general interest in history or spooky matters.
