Also at the time we had SP Pokemon. Think of the whole "evolved Pokemon as basics" from today's EX's, but these had much lower HP and didn't give two prizes. However, they had a really good Trainer engine with things like pic related, a tool that reduced attack costs, a Super Scoop Up for SPs that required no flip, and a Supporter that searched for another Supporter, a basic energy and one of the aforementioned Items.
People whined about it as much as they do about Toad now. Maybe more. But Vileplume sort of helped counter them when it was released.
