Riolu's name (リオル Rioru) is a shortened combination ripple (リップル rippuru) and ore (オール ooru). Ripple because both it and Lucario read "waves" through the aura. Ore because steel. Lucario (ルカリオ Rukario), on the other hand, comes from a combination of loup garou (ルーガムロー rūgarō), lycaon (リカオン rikaon) and orichalcum (オリカルクム orikarukumu). Loup garou is French for werewolf, lycaon is Greek for wolf and orichalcum is an imaginary Greek metal used by the Atlanteans. Then there's the famous Greek story of King Lycaon who offended Zeus and got turned into a wolf-man. The pseudo-medical term for werewolfism is lycanthropy.
Lucario is a Greek werewolf. Why the metal and aura bullshit? Werewolves can suck life force/cause curses and are weak to silver. Flip those into good things for a "good" werewolf and you have steel typing/sensitivity to life energy.
