Pokemon is a turn based game where large amounts of information are withheld at the beginning of battle and both players input their decisions for each turn simultaneously. Whether Charizard has earthquake is a 50/50 regarding whether heatran can or can't stop him. Whether the opposition's lead will use stealth rocks or attack is a 50/50 if you go for taunt. To say that having to make a guess based on unknown information and predicting what the opponent will do this turn is uncompetitive is to say that Pokemon's mechanics are uncompetitive on a basic fundamental level.
