It was harder in the first games because you could run into traps since the games didn't handhold you to your next position and give you free heals on every corner.
In Yellow for example you didn't know where Gary is in the Siph Co Tower and that he just approaches you when you enter the room. I got really suprised in my recent replay and nearly lost. You can also end up underleveled on several occasions due to gym leaders not needed to be beaten in order. I completely forgot that Koga came before Sabrina and had a hard time fighting her, and also didn't beat any of the trainers on the routes leading to him. THIS is what people mean when they say the older games were harder.
Also Lances Dragonite in Yellow is probably the strongest mon you will ever battle.
