Like you have some utterly pointlessly edgy twists like making Surge into a member of Team Rocket and making Maxie and Archie outright evil instead of misguided and some super over the top edgelord deaths (like IIRC Norman literally dies of heart failure after commanding Rayquaza and then Archie and Maxie cackle like madmen while Maxie burns the corpse with his Pokemon while Brendan watches and screams, wtf?). I think the defining "this is fanfic bullshit" moment for me was in Yellow where Lance tries to commit genocide on humanity because according to the manga he, Yellow, and fucking Giovanni were all born in the Viridian Forest and that gives them psychic empathy powers or some shit and then he saw people being mean to Pokemon. Last one I tried reading was Diamond Pearl because I was promised that the main characters were actually part of a comedy duo and it was actually pretty funny for a while but then Cyrus got on his bullshit and they split up to fight Galactic and the plot went full edgelord again so I fucked off. It's just not a good or well written story.
