Back when I was a young'un, I played through Pokemon Blue, and I was a big fan of the show, but most of the Pokemon I liked were because I liked them on the show. I liked Meowth. I liked Weezing. I liked Pidgeotto. They were opinions, but they were heavily influenced. Then Pokemon and I grew apart.
I got back into it with Leaf Green, and decided to use Squirtle as my starter, since I always used to pick Bulbasaur. Squirtle was fucking awesome. Then he evolved into Wartortle and was even MORE awesome. When the time came for him to evolve into Blastoise, I just kept pressing B. I don't know if it was the cute ears, or the majestic-as-fuck tail, but I preferred him as Wartortle, so I just kept him that way for the rest of the game. Even though he was under-evolved, he still pulled his weight, and I fucking loved him. He was MY first real bro.
I like Blastoise and all, but to me, he's a bit of a letdown. design-wise. I wish they had stuck with the "wise and long-lived tortoise" motif they had with Wartortle, instead of just making him a fat blue tank.
