Alright, how about this: How would you make it work?
The anime and games alike have implied that a full-time trainer is capable of supporting themselves and their team through money earned in battles, and that the alternative would be to just get a job. Would it be as simple as picking one of those while carrying on with the relationship? Would your partner battle? Would you even train other Pokemon, or maybe devote your improvement as a team with your partner as part of the relationship? Would you just get a job? Would you both get a job, depending of course on your partner's species?
And what's the verdict on the language barrier? Would you have to develop non-linguistic communication with your partner through months or years of being together, like some people in the anime seem to have done? Can your partner actually master speech and the English language like Team Rocket's Meowth?
