Arven probably never learned how to socially interact with others properly, and he clearly has trust and abandonment issues. He always made himself unapproachable to prevent himself from getting hurt, until he met the MC. That's why he's terrible as first impressions, as he says so himself. I think he had some "acquaintances" in the academy but no one he really called his friend, because he never opened up to someone.
Nemona seems like she'd be the popular girl. She's pretty, she's got good grades, she's the student council president. But her battle autism (and maybe her normal autism) is so severe that people started to dislike her eventually. People treat her either as some kind of wunderkind or just find her downright annoying because the never loses her battles and people hate getting destroyed by her.
Penny did make friends, but only online.
IRL they're actually all socially retarded in their own way. And that's the beauty of their friendship, imo. Because only something really weird like whatever happened in Area Zero could've brought them together like this.
