Here's a screenshot from an episode of BW. The woman spoke to the Pokemon, who she knew from childhood, about the importance of letting go of the past, because it was resentful over a bridge fucking their life up. Then the Pokemon wipes tears from the woman's eyes, and they hold hands like old friends.
If GameFreak wants people to think of Pokemon like simple pet animals, why do they repeatedly depict them like this? You can say what you want about animal intelligence, but I can guarantee that you'll NEVER find yourself talking to one about moving on from the past and coming to terms with resentment. If your priority is for people to see something as a simple pet animal, it makes absolutely no logical sense to depict it like that.
