A MAJOR detaiil of Ash and Misty's relationship in OS is that they are VERY VERY PHYSICAL. Much more than Ash is with any single companion.
They lean on each other, grab each other, hold hands, piggy back. They wrestle, they grab each other's mouths and noses. It doesn't necessarily come off as romantic (even if it's typical of a bf and gf) but more like they're just incredibly comfortable touching each other. Jesse and James are much the same way throughout the whole series.
In order to recreate their dynamic accurately they should be doing this, but it's probably difficult to do that without causing quakes in the fanbase
