You may be on to something with lolicon and shotacon not being realistic enough. Personally I think the appeal of the aforementioned is cuteness and the personalities can vary drastically from how you'd realistically expect a child to act. Even in Japan I kind of doubt that the three girls from Kodomo no Jikan would be considered the norm or normal at all.
