Whereas your average Pokemon fan wants to be able to use their favorites and do whatever. It's why they've kept trying to make features like Z-Crystals, Dynamax, or Nature changing items so that "Every Pokemon can shine" or something along those lines.
The closest I've seen this game get to mainstream popularity is 2014. Pachirisu got players on the more casual side really excited because it looked like a shitmon was keeping up with the rest of the competition. It also helped that Gen 6 online was actually well designed and beginner friendly.
