It's a party-building pet simulator. Players will be more emotionally attached to the fun battles they had with their starter. Not a rival with a sob story or a criminal team trying to rule the world.
Just go back to having backgrounds or location lore optional like it was before Gen 5/6/7 forced every bit of backstory on the player.
