Abilities and held items are for high level play, such as post-game battle facilities or PVP. If you don't care for either of these things, and the main story bores you, why do you even bother playing?
What's wrong with having these extra mechanics that aren't even intrusive during the story, for those who want more from the game? Why do you demand the enjoyment of others be sacrificed just to bury an aspect you never had to pay any mind to to begin with? If anything, Nature had a bigger effect on story gameplay than most abilities or held items. Those at least dictated the growth of certain stats.
Also, since we're waving sales numbers around, just a reminder that Sun and Moon sold over 14 million in the same timespan as LGPE's 10. And since you're probably gonna argue that the 3DS has a bigger install base, I'll also point out that X and Y broke 11 million, in the same time span, back when the 3DS had similar numbers to the Switch.
