The biggest thing I'd want to do for bugs is change the attitude we're meant to have toward them. The games treat them as throwaway training devices and npc fodder crap, usually given to small children so you can paste them with your starter and feel better about yourself. Anime doesn't do much better.
Bugs should be built up as awesome. Exoskeletons, impressive strength ratios, freakishly cool adaptations, and some of the best aesthetics in the animal kingdom give you a lot to work with. And hey, Japan loves bugs, that's where pokemon come from.
If you see a bunch of bug pokemon you should think "Oh swarmshit mob trash, quantity over quality copy pasted caterpillars." You should think "Holy fuck just one of those will end me does an escape rope work here?" A bug should be your personal hero and best bud.
I like the idea of type rebalancing to make the already existing hoards more of a threat and revise history, and as for moving forward let's start with a very good bug-type incorporating starter.
