The Gen 5 starters are based on the Three Brothers of Romance of the Three Kingdoms…
>Samurott = Lui Bei, magnanimous and honorable, like a samurai ideal. Portrayed with a mustache & goatee similar to Samurott’s. He wields twin swords (Razor Shell, Fury Cutter, Slash, Swords Dance) and can possess the Shell Armor ability>Serperior = Guan Yu, imperious and known for his piercing gaze which transfixes opponents to the spot (Leer/Glare). Wields the green serpent blade (Leaf Blade). Serperior’s chest leaves resemble Guan Yu’s long beard. The animated sprite from BW2 thoughtfully strokes its chest leaves the same way Guan Yu strokes his beard.>Emboar = Zhang Fei, wild and crazy (Reckless ability), known for his fiery temper. Often described as charging into danger “like a wild boar” (Flame Charge, Rollout, Heat Crash, Flare Blitz). Emboar has a fiery beard which is similar to Zhang Fei’s trademark short thick beard.Triple battles were introduced in Gen 5. The Three Brothers were strongest when they fought as one. Perhaps the designers wanted a trio of starters to reflect the new type of battle?
Water Pledge, Fire Pledge & Grass Pledge (Oath/Pledge of the Peach Garden) were introduced in Gen 5. All three starters can learn these moves, the moves are most powerful when used together. Initially only starters could learn these moves, implying that their is a connection and bond between them, like a brotherhood.
