I don't think fiction has to mirror reality, but some realism helps keep a world somewhat grounded in a believable state that serves to maintain the player/reader's immersion.
For example, Fogbound Lake in Explorers is clearly something grounded in fiction, but the dense forest surrounding it, covered in fog that must be lifted to reveal the nature of the lake, keeps it grounded in realism because it's believable. Dense foggy forests would be great at obscuring massive landmarks from the untrained eye.
