He went into the Pokemon journey believing he was destined to be the best, but learned the reality that there's always going to be someone better than you. He's able to use that knowledge to find happiness as a gym leader.
Bianca has a similar bit of character development where she realizes that her passion isn't for battling but for caring and learning about Pokemon, and that leads right into her new position as a professors aide.
Cheren's ideals changed into the truth. Bianca's truth turned into ideals.
