it was not the actual earthquake that did Fukushima in, nor the bulk of the inland wreckage. If the earthquake happened at the reactor site, nothing would have happened. Cause as intended, the active fission reactor operation was automatically stopped with immediate detection of seismic waves. The back-up generators kick in and pump in coolant water to wait out the seismic activity. The problem was that earthquake happened 160km east in the ocean. It was the resultant tsunami wave that slowly built over that distance in the ocean to 40m high waves. That height of water easily eclipsed the reactor sites sea walls, resulting in flooding and failure of those back-up generators. After that, there was nothing left to cool the fuel rods and quench the decay products, leading to hydrogen gas build-up and explosions at 3 of their 4 reactors.
