There was no common ground for them outside of the antics and actions caused by the player protagonist.I remember that being somewhat addressed in the game itself, getting bond to over the adventures rather than having things in common.
Worked out in the end for them though so I guess that counts, and them getting to see it in the anime what it looks like outside of the Game Protagonists PoV is nice.
