I wonder how Hoenn would have been different if May had two starters. I guess May wouldn't have gotten Squirtle in BF then either since she would already have a water type (and being a starter of the gen the writers wouldn't leave it behind), and I suppose it would have gotten better screentime.
I kinda like in theory the 3 starters split among the cast in Hoenn, but Brock's Mudkip did so little it felt like an afterthought. I really don't think it ever got an episode to star in outside the ep it evolved into Marshtomp and then the one contest.
