I only used Tyranitar because you can buy a Level 40 Larvitar at the Celadon Game Corner in Crystal; I'd been using a Graveler before that. Pupitar did a good job against Kanto, but it still didn't evolve until right before I battled Red, by which point I'd defeated literally every other trainer in the game. It sucks that I didn't get to use Tyranitar for very long, but it did take out half of Red's team even at Level 55 so I can't complain too much.
