The demand for Tamagotchi was huge and Bandai was struggling to keep up, leaving the door open for competitors to push out their own virtual pets, like Nano Pets and Giga Pets. They were easier to find and much cheaper, but they were all trash. They were bad enough that they dragged Tamagotchi's reputation down with them, and by the time Bandai was producing enough Tamagotchi to meet demand, the demand was gone and they nearly went bankrupt. If it wasn't for them getting some major toy licenses and Digimon taking off the way it did, Bandai would've been fucked before 2000.
