I'm starting to think that Xerneas and Yveltal take inspiration from the tale of Orihime and Hikoboshi to some extent, with their more obvious design elements being parallels to the corresponding stars', Vega and Altair, Western constellations.
Yveltal is based on the constellation Aquila, the eagle while Xerneas takes elements from Lyra, the harp. Zygarde being made of many cells is a parallel to the magpies in the tale making a bridge.
