You can definitely tell Wiiware's new mechanics were a proto to the things the 3DS games added. Enemy evos were introduced there, but unlike the 3DS entries don't factor in Reviver Seeds, so you're instantly fucked if you let any of your teammates fall compared to the leniency Super gives. Similarly, the Tower mechanic feels a lot like an early Alliance where you can use an assortment of team moves, but it's a lot more tedious mechanically.
Definitely feels like they were testing waters for what was to come later since these new things were added on top of the Explorers engine.
