The map structure worked better as well in my opinion. Instead of creating new maps for the post-game ala FRLG the Gen 5 sequels opted to simply move what was early-game routes to the post-game, and vice versa, resulting in a mishmashed retreading of the games from a mere one year prior. As such BW2 ended up having better post-game facilities but less to explore before and after the credits.
