If we're being more strict, either gen 4 or gen 5 depending on how much you dislike being forced down a specific path with little to no deviation. If we're talking about OG standards, either Emerald or RBY depending on how technical you want to be. Even as a fan of gen 4, it's hard to argue that the games were just as good as they were during the first iteration, especially since they started getting designed with more of a competitive mindset (See: Battle Frontier) rather than the casual, child-friendly mindset that made them popular to begin with.
