Outside of arguably BW and SM, the stories are shallow and mostly just an excuse to justify more gameplay (because it would be weird if the game just transitioned from route to route to battle to battle with no explanation why this is happening until the end). SV was neat for Pokémon story standards but basically nothing happened until the very end of the game. Story focused games have big plot beats happening throughout the experience.
