I would advice to go in ignoring the "hedge" meme.
Pokéspe isn't that gory, I think you can count the istances of hedge on the fingers of one hand.
This famous Arbok pic that is used to argue that the manga is "so mature" compared to the source material can be seen as early installment weirdness if I can quote that site, and even then the Arbok survives to showcase its regenerative abilities.
If you expect to read a pokémon manga where trainers get killed and shit you'll be disappointed.
Pokéspe is a good manga, every arc has unique characters and while they diverge from the game plot in minor or major ways they all have their pro and cons so give it a try.
