I suppose I should start by with the characters. The characters in Gen 5 are completely forgettable; I can't remember anything about Bianca other than that she really likes pokemon, and all I remember about Cheren is that he's basically a much less interesting version of Joe Kido from Digimon Adventure. N was alright, but there's really not much to say about him.
And then we have Ghetsis. Ghetsis is so bad that he gets his own paragraph. I speak no hyperbole when I say that Ghetsis is not only one of the worst Pokemon villains ever written, but also one of the worst villains ever written full stop: he's not intimidating; he's not cool; he doesn't say anything insightful or truthful about people (in our world or the Pokemon world); his goal is literally just a rehash of Cyrus' goal from Gen 4; he's not even a sympathetic villain, which would honestly forgive most of his other shortcomings; he's just an idiot with delusions of grandeur.
The story is also terrible. It's literally just Ghetsis spouting preachy PETA BS about how pokemon battles are evil, when they're not evil when you look at them in any way whatsoever. And Ghetsis' plan hinges entirely on everyone in Unova being too stupid to realize that he's full of hot air.
But you know something? I'm not an unreasonable person; I can forgive a lot of things. I could forgive all of Gen 5's shortcomings: the forgettable characters; the terrible story; the terrible villain; I could forgive all of that - ALL OF IT - if it weren't so boring.
