I like lore and canon too but if an author has an idea that doesn't fit, I'd rather just let them take liberties as long as it's not hamfisted and makes sense in the way it's being presented.
Like I used to like Dawn/Cyrus a lot until 90% of the fics I saw had Cyrus as a sadistic rapist and no motivation for anything he fucking did. I can handle a lot of squick but without any set up it just seemed really stupid. Finding actual realistic character portrayals and interactions is so hard.
