I’m going to put my unwanted two cents here. I know you guys feel this is a safe space for your contrarian and controversial opinions but let’s be real a little bit.
Why is it that whenever it comes to a dark skinned character (and we’re still limiting the examples to Pokémon here) they have to be everything but black? Now this is an understandable argument for the first four gens, all based on areas in Japan, but then GameFreak decided to expand their horizons and do worldwide things and be inclusive to the point of dark skin character customization (big whoop I know) and now you guys sound racist instead of “educated” and it’s pitiful.
No character beyond her is confirmed in terms of race/ethnicity (maybe Clayton too actually) and a lot of the time the reason people say a dark skinned character ISN’T black is because of something about their face or body that’s…unrealistic? In a fantasy world? In a video game? That matters all of a sudden?
Again I’ve seen it “justified” based on a regions irl location but keep in mind that Lt. Surge is white. He’s American. And none of his features say that beyond his blond hair and clothing but if the clothing wasn’t there what gives it away then? What’s stopping you from saying Volkner isn’t American? They’re both blond.
The only CONFIRMED black character to my knowledge is Lenora. I also believe she’s the first. So what if the dark skinned character in question doesn’t have sheep wool hair? What changes if it’s confirmed Phoebe/Matt/Raihan are black?
What’s happening is they don’t fit your stigmatized image of black people and so they can’t be black. Raihan can’t be black cause he doesn’t say the N-word and he’s not sagging his pants. If you’re going to be racist at least be blunt. Just say you don’t like the idea of them being black.
I hope you guys have a good day
