It doesn't have *as* strong characterization like DP Ash or as good as a rival as Paul, but beyond that it set out with a goal in mind and delivers on it. There's lost opportunities with Serena's character, the ending is utterly shit, there's still too much filler, and of course, any standard of "good" is still within the metric of it being a Pokemon Anime. It's still pretty mediocre compared to most well loved animation. But purely within in the context of it being a Pokemon anime, XY is good.
