As the name implies they were featured with trainers before they started being solo. This is the same concept as the trainer gallery cards from Cosmic Eclipse that are labelled (in
pkmncards.com) as Rare Secret although they are unlike other Rare Secret. Due to the different names (Illustration Rare, Trainer Gallery Holo Rare, Rare Secret) I like to think of them as "textureless full arts". I consider them the same card type, they used to be rare and very affordable and now they're more common and somehow more valuable. People paying so much for textureless modern cards will never stop surprising me, weird market.
