I actually rewatched the AJ episode from OS S1 today and I just still couldn't wrap my head around him constantly shouting at his team, calling them names, cracking whips, and drilling them to sheer exhaustion. Sure they were strong, but he could have also achieved that through positive reinforcement, without being needlessly cruel and running his little unaccredited "gym" like the military. Also they were still shitmons and he probably got his ass beat quick after leaving to actually travel.
