Not 100% related but I remember this official map of the Pokemon World that was given out during the Darkrai movie in Japan. It even has all the locations from all the movies up to that point.

I know how you feel. I'd love to go explore a world that looks realistic yet has the wonder of the pokemon world. In fact, one thing I really liked about XY (and gen 6 in general) was how they got rid of the tree borders. Made for a much more realistic experience. I just wish I could actually step on it! I'd love it if they would even put a few more extra areas that you don't need to visit, like how in the movies Ash travels to different cities that don't affect the main plot and are just there for beauty's sake. They nail it with the gen 4 and 5 post game, but I'd still like to have it during the main game. Ambrette Town in Kalos seemed to be like that prior to the game's events, and I wouldn't have mind if they had it as a completely optional area. Like, the cave splits and you could have the choice to battle the gym leader or go on a detour. I wonder how long until they actually do something like that. I know there are things like Floaroma Meadow+Fuego Ironworks but I'd like it better if there was an entire alternate pathway you could take.

Overworlds would be based on the actual anime. Roaming around vast landscapes with various climates, forests (like you see in the anime), no hopping from one city to another in just three steps, etc.

I myself was thinking GTA V/Skyrim (in terms of graphics and worldsize, see map) combined with Final Fantasy/The Last Remnant for battle initiation, enemy encounters.
