I hate to come up with this suggestion this late, but I think it would really benefit from this on both aesthetical and symbolical levels:
- Would make the starting town look less dull and depressing.
- New grass popping under melting snow symbolizes the coming of the spring, rebirth, new cycle, etc
- Would actually match the defrosted river, since in a town fully covered by snow, it makes more sense it should be completely frozen.
