Considering Serena made a promise to Ash before the escalator scene on how she’d be a changed person and Ash would like the new person that she’d become (which was unfortunately lost in the dub), and the fact that Serena DID change is massive. If they wanted to retcon shit, then they’d just have her come back completely unchanged, implying that conversation and subsequent event never took place.
