A good way to make it less blocky is to simply add some asymmetry to the layout. Look at New Bark Town, for example. There's a good balance of open space without feeling cramped or empty. That area on the right of the town, for example, is extremely unnecessary and odd, and generally speaking the presence of tall grass in a town, let alone the first town, should be avoided outside of instances where it is supposed to be a hidden area.
As for making it feel forest-ey, I would either use different tiles to make the place look more wild, like changing the path or just lessening how much of it covers the grass. Look at examples of forests in the official games and try to mimic that feel when making your town. Comparisons are extremely vital to making your maps feel more official.

The first route needs to be almost completely, recreated in my opinion. The layout feels too plain and boring, and everything feels far larger and spread than it needs to be. Once again I'd recommend looking over the spacing and size of official routes and use that to get a better idea of the layout.
