As we all know Pokemon makes a remake of an older game every generation starting with gen 3's Fire Red/Leaf Green. Going by the current pattern which is the game from 3 generations ago, the next game in line for a remake would be Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Recently, Nintendo along with Niantic released Pokemon Go which was a huge success for Nintendo, sure it's popular with current fans of Pokemon but the main success in Go is that it reintroduced old fans of Pokemon who played the main series games as kids, Genwunners as they are called on /vp/. Pokemon hasn't been such a hot topic since the first ones came out. which is why I think Gamefreak making a second Remake of R/B/G a pretty sound business decision on Nintendo's part.
Firstly, Nintendo would probably want to capitalize on this huge influx of old fans playing their FREE app before they start to lose interest. A new version of the original games in fancy 3d graphics would most certainly do the trick of securing said fans as opposed to a DP remake which they probably never cared about or even heard of for that matter. Gen 1 was the most popular one of them all having the most sales across all generations.
Second, it's a HUGE opportunity for Nintendo to reclaim the former glory of Pokemon. In every generation since 1 the sales for main series Pokemon games have dropped. Over the course of the last 3 generations, Pokemon sales have fallen from 25.2 to 14.7 million copies sold that's 10.5 million less. with the influx of these old fans and new fans from Go's massive publicity, I don't see why this new R/B 3d wouldn't surpass over 20 million sales though by all means i'm no economist.
Finally, this is a great opportunity for Nintendo to sell 3ds systems seeing as how these old fans probably don't own anything older than GBC and you'll need one to play. To prevent people from just buying a used one from Ebay or something i can see Nintendo selling a bundle with the game inside and a cool skin
