The pokemon experience is honestly not very personal anymore. It's the same story with the same deadpan smiling kid as SM awkwardly in emotional cutscenes. SwSh is ugly as hell to boot.
If I want to play dress-up I can do so in Splatoon, the look of your trainer is about the only thing you actually get to customize beyond naming stuff. Everything else is either planned out or RNG. Your dialogue choices only affect maybe 1 or 2 lines of flavor text.
