A lot of people complain that pokemon is too easy and I agree, so I have a concept for a pokemon game that is simultaneously difficult and unique. The setting would occur prior to the events of RBY. The story is that the current residents of kanto were all part of a diaspora people who use pokemon to wage war against the present residents of kanto who, as the story unfolds, retreat back to johto.
The supporting characters would be people like lt. surge (who is seargent), koga, and agatha who is a military scientist providing the minimum context required at the beginning of the game and gives you your starter. All original 151 pokemon and their evolutionary lines introduced past generation 1 are featured throughout the game.
There are no pokemon centers and there is only one mart in essentially the one base camp at the start with a limited inventory, so you have to craft pokeballs yourself from acorns you find on trees. You have to craft potions and ethers you eventually obtain from materials and plans in the game to heal your pokemon as well as rely on herbs that make your pokemon seethe (so it's not so easy at the beginning to get your pokemon to evolve by affection). The player has a life bar, so if you get into a pokemon fight with no pokemon that are conscious, then the wild pokemon you encounter or even trainers can chip at you as you attempt to flee. So it's game over if a pokemon kills you. This also means you can now flee trainer battles, but they can also pursue you. There are also save points so you can't just save and respawn wherever you want.
